The main purpose of the street bollard is to protect pedestrians on footpaths and pavements from accidents caused by vehicles on the road, particularly in urban areas or rural public spaces.
Whether retractable, removable or fixed, the bollard’s shape, which is more imposing than that of street bollards, makes it highly resistant to impacts, preventing vehicles from parking on pavements or in pedestrian areas: this is the primary function of the parking bollard.
The bollard can also be used, as in the case of the ram-proof bollard or anti-intrusion bollard, to protect public gathering places such as school exits or playgrounds. It can be used to demarcate pedestrian areas or shopping centre car parks, or to control access to sensitive sites (such as banks or embassies) in the heart of towns and cities.
