The Importance of secure cycle parking
With the rise of "Active Travel" schemes across the UK, demand for quality bike parking is soaring.
- The Sheffield Stand: The gold standard in the UK. A simple steel arch that allows the cyclist to lock both the frame and wheels to the stand. It is the most recommended design by security experts.
- High Density: For stations or offices with limited space, our two-tier racks or semi-vertical racks maximise the number of bikes per square metre.
Finish: Options range from utilitarian galvanised steel to sleek 304 or 316 (marine grade) stainless steel for prestigious developments.
BREEAM & Code for Sustainable Homes
Architects often specify our racks to meet BREEAM requirements. To gain credits, cycle storage must be secure, covered, and lit. Combining our racks with our cycle shelters helps developments achieve these sustainability ratings
FAQ
What is the recommended spacing for sheffield stands?
To allow two bikes to park comfortably (one on each side), we recommend spacing Sheffield stands 800mm to 1000mm apart. This ensures handlebars don't clash and cyclists have room to manoeuvre.
Which bike rack is best for narrow pavements ?
For narrow areas, we recommend "semi-vertical" racks or angled hoops. However, care must be taken not to obstruct the pedestrian thoroughfare. In some cases, wall-mounted loops are the best space-saving solution.
Are your racks compatible with disc brakes ?
Sheffield stands are fully compatible as the bike leans against the frame. For "wheel gripper" slots (low-level racks), we design them to accommodate standard tyre widths, but care should be taken with older "butterfly" styles which can bend disc rotors; we generally recommend hoop stands for modern bikes.
How do I install a bike rack on tarmac ?
Tarmac is not strong enough to hold bolts under tension (they will pull out if a thief levers the rack). We strongly recommend concrete-in installation for tarmac surfaces. If you must bolt down, you need to cast concrete pads beneath the tarmac at the fixing points.
What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel ?
Grade 304 is the standard for internal or general external use. Grade 316 contains molybdenum, making it much more resistant to salt corrosion. We highly recommend Grade 316 for any installation within 10 miles of the UK coast to prevent "tea-staining" (surface rust).
